Final day in Whitehorse

Today we picked up the vehicle that hopefully will take us to the Arctic Ocean. One of the big questions for us was what would we be driving and how are the tires. We know that the Dempster is a dirt and shale road, that can eat up tires.  Some of our concerns were put to rest today when we got this baby.

This is almost a brand new Jeep Wrangler, with only 1500 Km.  The tires, including the spare are almost brand new.  The vehicle is an off-road vehicle with 4 wheel drive if we need it. Feeling now like we have the best possible vehicle to make this trip.

This beast is so high, you almost need a small step ladder to climb in, and be careful when you get out, it is quite a drop.

Today we visited the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, kind of a Territorial Zoo, although they do some rehabilitation for injured animals.  This place is really for visitors who would like to get close to wildlife you can find here in the Canadian North.

Here are some of what we saw today, Elk, Bison, Caribou, Lynx, Arctic Fox and Moose.

The tour through this property was very informative. We would rather take a guided tour where we get more detailed information rather than just walk the property on our own and try to guess what we were looking at.  The mountain scenery was also awesome.

On our tour, were a couple from Vancouver who seemed to think they knew everything about what they were looking at. Now if you already know everything, why are you here?  The fellow asked where we were from, we said Southern Ontario around Toronto. He said oh yes, he used to live in Cobourg.  So I told him that he would be familiar with Bowmanville.  His response to us was that he had never heard of it!!!  Do you think he was a bit full of BS??

Also on this tour was a fellow with two kids, one was around 8 and the other 12, nice kids. The fellow struck me as a bit odd, kind of introverted.  They live here in Whitehorse.  During our tour we stopped many times to leave the tour bus to get closer to the different animals and listen to the tour guide giving us information.  On the first stop this fellow with the two kids stayed on the bus, opened a sketch pad and drew this picture in about 3 or 4 minutes,

AMAZING!!!
His name is Andrew Sharp, I asked his permission to take his picture.  He drew a couple of other sketches as well, what a talented young man. We were very impressed.

After our visit, we headed to Miles Canyon, a place we were told that we could get amazing scenic pictures.  There is a suspension bridge here and if you really know me, you know that I am deathly afraid of heights, so I wasn't sure how far I would be going.

The beauty of this place is typical of what we have seen here in the Yukon. Just beautiful.

And YES, I did cross that bridge, with no alcohol required.

Finally after dinner tonight, we went to check out the local bowling centre.  10 Lanes of 5 Pin, run by gentleman who is from England.  He bought the business just as COVID began, but they are growing the business now.

Tomorrow we are back on the road, heading for Dawson City. Weather forecast is calling for rain and thunder storms. Wait until you see the cinnamon buns.  Stay tuned.

  2. The photos of the scenery are awesome. I like the Jeep, be sure you fill up before heading up to the Arctic, not sure if the Jeep has a good km/litre range. Did you go bowling?
